Chin Augmentation
Chin mandible contour
Chin augmentation is ideal for correcting the aesthetic imbalance caused by a ‘weak’ or receded chin. During the procedure, an appropriately sized chin implant is inserted through an incision in the mouth or through a small incision under the chin to increase the size and/or projection of the chin.
Chin augmentation is often performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to achieve optimal proportion between the chin, nose, and other facial features.

X-rays will be taken of your face and chin prior to surgery and used to determine which part of the chin to operate on.
If only an implant is needed to round out the chin, the following procedures are the most commonly used:
- Performed under general anesthesia (asleep and pain-free).
- A small incision is made, either inside the mouth or outside under the chin which creates a pocket in front of the chin bone and under the muscles. The implant is placed inside and attached to the bone with stitches or screws.
- Sutures are used to close the surgical cut. When the cut is inside the mouth, the scar can barely be seen.
Depending on the individual patient, we may also need to move some bones and to cut inside the mouth along the lower gum to give access to the chin bone. This procedure takes between one and three hours.
